The film, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov and based on Olivier Guez’s acclaimed novel, was presented in the CANNES PREMIERE section at the 2024 Festival de Cannes
CIMARRÓN (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO) took part in this year’s Cannes Film Festival with The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, a film in which the Uruguayan company serves as a co-producer. Directed by Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov, the film was showcased in the CANNES PREMIERE section — the director’s sixth appearance at the festival, and his first in this non-competitive section.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Olivier Guez — published in Spain by Tusquets Editores and winner of the 2017 Prix Renaudot — the film is a France-Germany-Uruguay co-production. On behalf of CIMARRÓN (THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO), co-producers include Hernán Musaluppi, Diego Robino, Santiago López, and Sandino Saravia Vinay. The film is produced by Charles Gillibert (CG Cinema), Ilya Stewart (Hype Studios), Felix von Boehm (Lupa Films), and Mélanie Biessy (Scala Films), with additional production support from Arte France Cinéma, Scala Films, Forma Pro Films, and Piano.
The Disappearance of Josef Mengele, marks Serebrennikov’s sixth film to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival, and his first in the non-competitive CANNES PREMIÈRE section. In the film Serebrennikov delves into one of history’s darkest figures, examining the depths of human cruelty. After the end of World War II, Josef Mengele — the infamous Nazi physician of Auschwitz known as the “Angel of Death” — fled to South America to escape justice and rebuild his life in hiding. From Buenos Aires to Paraguay, and eventually Brazil, Mengele orchestrated his disappearance with calculated precision, evading trial until his death
August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds) stars in the title role, supported by a cast that includes Burghart Klaußner (The White Ribbon) and Heinz K. Krattiger (Edha), among others).
The film was shot on location in both Europe and Uruguay, capturing the historical and emotional weight of the story.
The Disappearance of Josef Mengele will be distributed in France by Bac Films and in Germany by DCM.
