Production is underway on the second season of CELESTE, the Movistar Plus+ original series created by Diego San José and starring Carmen Machi. Co-produced with 100 Balas, the comedy returns following a critically acclaimed first season that positioned Celeste as one of the standout Spanish series of recent years, earning recognition across major international festivals and awards. The first season received widespread critical praise and picked up the Best Comedy Series awards at the Premios Ondas and Premios Feroz. It was also named Best Series in the Panorama section at Series Mania, won Best Comedy at the Italian Global Series Festival and the Festival Internacional de Cine de Almería, and received multiple additional nominations.

San José returns as lead writer, joined by Oriol Puig, who was part of the first season’s writing team, along with Fernando Delgado‑Hierro and Daniel Castro, both collaborators on Jakarta and the first season of Celeste. Elena Trapé returns to direct all six half-hour episodes, marking her third collaboration with San José after Celeste season one and Jakarta. The new season retains the core creative team behind the original instalment while introducing a fresh narrative focus.

FROM DIEGO SAN JOSÉ:

“There’s only one thing with a worse reputation than tax inspectors: sequels. That’s precisely why CELESTE deserved a second season, because the only universe with less charisma than the corridors of the Tax Agency is the world of follow-ups.

This season changes many elements while keeping our original intention intact: to explore Spain through its public servants. A country is defined as much by what it rejects as by what it idolizes — and that led us to professional football. Tax inspectors lack admiration; footballers have it in abundance. They’re the true idols of our time. A striker can be forgiven for anything from Monday to Friday as long as he keeps hitting the back of the net on the weekend. Only Sara Santano can challenge something as sacred in Spain as football. That’s why it had to be her.”

Carmen Machi reprises her role as Sara Santano, the uncompromising Tax Agency inspector who has become one of the most distinctive characters of her career. Her performance in the first season earned multiple accolades, including the Fotogramas de Plata, the Premios Forqué and the Academia de Televisión de España Iris Award, along with Best Actress recognition at Series Mania and the Italian Global Series Festival. These honours add to a career spanning more than 40 awards, including a Premios Goya, three Premios Max, a Premios Ondas and the Honorary Biznaga at the Festival de Málaga.

The start of filming coincides with Celeste’s growing international momentum. The series recently premiered in France on Arte, generating strong critical response, and has also launched in Argentina on the Flow, where it has been warmly received.

Synopsis

In season two, Sara Santano reopens the investigation into a famous footballer who previously managed to evade his tax obligations, a case that brings the inspector face-to-face with one of the most influential worlds in contemporary Spain.
